He is a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (FCCA), and an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (ACMA). He has a Masters degree (Administrative Sciences) from City University Business School, London, and a Higher Education Teaching Certificate (with Distinction) from the Institute of Education at the University of London. In the past he has been MBA Programme Director and Head of Centre for Financial Management in the UK Open University Business School, Director of Accounting Studies at the University of Hertfordshire, and Head of School of Accounting & Taxation at London South Bank University where he was also Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Administrative Studies
Alan has extensive experience of face to face teaching, and distance and open learning preparation and delivery, more recently including the application of new technologies. Teaching experience has been across MBA level, Undergraduate level courses, and vocational and professional level courses. Teaching has not been limited to accounting and finance, stretching across the management spectrum, but with an emphasis of integrating accounting/finance with other management subject areas. He has a particular expertise in helping managers to make sense of matters financial. He has a wealth of experience of course design and course administration, and combines a sound technical base with excellent communication and facilitation skills.
He has authored over 20 texts for The UK Open University and has also written for the Institute of Internal Auditors UK and Financial Training. Managerial Finance, a well-received text book, is published by Butterworth Heinemann.
He consistently receives high praise for his sessions, delivered with the motto of Making Finance Fun, reflecting his belief that smiling is a particularly good hobby to have.
